For traditional (or acoustic) instruments of this type (e.g., woodwinds and most brass), the ways in which the combinations of keys can be assigned to the notes are limited by physics. However, for electronic instruments of this type, there are essentially no such limitations. In this paper, we exploit this freedom and present several designs for electronic instruments which are optimally easy to play; that is, the total movement of the fingers when playing some common sequences of notes (i.e., various, general collections of scales) is minimized. Our designs are built upon Gray codes, which are used in digital communications. 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Auditory-Tactile Interaction Using Digital Signal Processing In Musical Instruments

This paper lays emphasis on research that gives an insight to the auditory-tactile perception in electronic musical instruments (here, electronic violin) stating that most traditional musical instruments inherently convey tactile feedback to the performer along with the auditory feedback which leads to a tight performer-instrument relationship which is not found in electronic musical instrument...

Problems and prospects for intimate and satisfying sensor-based control of computer sound

Electronic musical instruments consist of some kind of sensor/input system, software to interpret the sensed data, and sound synthesis. Electronic instruments should provide intimate and satisfying control over sound comparable to the control that an expert musician has over a fine acoustic instrument. These elements are necessary for such electronic instruments: low latency and virtually no ji...

UnitInstrument: Easy Configurable Musical Instruments

Musical instruments have a long history, and many types of musical instruments have been created to attain ideal sound production. At the same time, various types of electronic musical instruments have been developed. Since the main purpose of conventional electronic instruments is to duplicate the shape of acoustic instruments with no change in their hardware configuration, the diapason and th...

Using Haptic Devices to Interface Directly with Digital Waveguide-Based Musical Instruments

A haptic musical instrument is an electronic musical instrument that provides the musician not only with audio feedback but also with force feedback. By programming feedback controllers to emulate the laws of physics, many haptic musical instruments have been previously designed that mimic real acoustic musical instruments. The controller programs have been implemented using finite difference a...

Fragile instruments: constructing destructible musical interfaces

We introduce a family of fragile electronic musical instruments designed to be “played” through the act of destruction. Each Fragile Instrument consists of an analog synthesizing circuit with embedded sensors that detect the destruction of an outer shell, which is destroyed and replaced for each performance. Destruction plays an integral role in both the spectacle and the generated sounds. This...
